Benassal
Benassal has a population of 1,390 and is situated in the “Alto Maestrazgo” region, about 35km to the north-west of Alcocebre. The village is of Arab origin, it was conquered in 1234, when Don Blasco of Alagón took the Castle of Culla with all its surrounding areas, including Benassal. In the War of Succession Benassal took the side of Felipe of Anjou for Don Carlos in the Carlist wars. Later, it’s recovery from the civil war was slow and expensive.
It’s most prominent feature are the spa springs in Segures.
