Culla
Culla has a population of 725 and is located in the district of “El Maestrazgo”. It’s some 40km to the west of Alcocebre and can be reach via several routes, two of which are through Cabanes or Alcala de Xivert. It has the typical local landscape of rocky mountains and valleys.
Culla shows it’s prehistoric origins through it’s archaeological remains and it’s cave paintings. Until the start of the 13th century it was under Arab control until it was re-conquered, in 1233, by Don Blasco of Alagón. It was officially recognised as a village in 1244 when it was granted “Carta Puebla”.
The Castle of Culla at that time had an important strategic position within the region. In 1303 it is sold to the “Orden del Temple” (Order of the Knights Templer) later, in 1317, ownership was passed on the “Orden de Montesa”. The importance of the “Setena de Culla” or "Comunitat d'Herbatge" should be highlight. Made up of seven local villages, the community lasted until the middle of the 14th century. In the late 14th century, after the Carlist war, the Castle of Culla was destroyed, that being the current state of the castle.
